Levels of Play

10 & Under
12 & Under
14 & Under
18 & Under

10 & Under
Novice

It is strongly recommended that these players contact a facility near them that offers programs using the 10 & Under Tennis (QuickStart) format.
 
Intermediate B
It is recommended, but not required to use Penn Star balls for these players. See Operating Procedures for more information
Has had instruction, entering competition for first time
Beginning to keep score
This player has limited serving experience
Just starting to get the serve over the net (3 out of 10)
Can make contact on balls within reach but not consistent
 
Intermediate A
Prior match/league/tournament experience
Familiar with correct scoring
Understands basic doubles position
Able to serve into the correct box. Limited double faults
Can volley slower paced balls
Becoming familiar with court positioning during rallies
Able to return most balls on forehands and backhands
 
Advanced

All “Exceptional Qualifiers” on the 10 & under tournament ranking list must play at a higher age division.

Novice
Entering competition for first time
This player has limited serving experience
Able to serve some balls into the correct box. (3 out of 10)
Beginning to keep score
Contacting most balls on forehand and backhand with limited success in rallying
Beginning to learn correct positioning for singles and doubles
 
Intermediate B
Prior match/league/tournament experience
Familiar with correct scoring
Understands basic doubles position and familiar with court position during rallies
Able to serve into the correct box. (5 out of 10) Limited double faults
Able to return most balls and beginning to show some consistency
Can volley slower paced balls on both forehand and backhand sides
 
Intermediate A
Has league experience/some satellite tournament success
Serve has some pace with a reliable second delivery
Consistent groundstrokes with some power and accuracy
Volleys and overheads hit with some consistency
Correct doubles positioning and some poaching evident
 
Advanced
Moving up from satellite level to championship level tournaments
Open tournament success
This player can force errors when serving
Player has dependable strokes, including the use of spin and power. Able to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys to set up points. Beginning to use a game plan
Teamwork in doubles is evident

Able to serve into the correct box. (5 out of 10) Limited double faults
Able to return most balls and beginning to show some consistency
Can volley slower paced balls on both forehand and backhand sides
Successful junior varsity player and lower doubles varsity players
 
Intermediate A
Has league experience/some satellite tournament success
Serve has some pace with a reliable second delivery
Consistent groundstrokes with some power and accuracy
Volleys and overheads hit with some consistency
Correct doubles positioning and some poaching evident
Some success at varsity singles or #1 doubles
 
Advanced
Moving up from satellite level to championship level tournaments
Open tournament success
Competing at the state level for a high school singles or doubles title
This player can force errors when serving and receiving
Player has dependable strokes, including the use of spin and power
Using lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys as weapons. Has a game plan
Teamwork in doubles is evident
